Nice 'ARS' for Windows

Release 2.0 Beta

Welcome to the "Nice ARS" page.

"Nice ARS" is a conversion of Craig Grahams excellent Action Replay file Server.  Craigs original, as good as it was (and still is) was limited to run on Windows 95 and DOS.  This version uses the same underlying principle, but now comes with a nice GUI front end* and is Windows NT compatible.

Brief Instuctions

Exact instructions are contained in the 'readme' file contained in the Zip archive.

Download the ZIP file.

Windows NT Users.

Since NT applications cannot directly read or write to hardware, a device driver must be used.   This device driver must be placed in your 'WinNT\system32\drivers' directory.  But that's not all.  So the device driver is recognized, you must also register the 'genport.reg' file into the registry(this is not as simple as double clicking the registry file, so please read the readme file in the Zip archive).   This tells the OS that genport.sys is a device driver and also tells genport.sys what settings to use.  Port 0x320 is the default, although changing the registry settings will enable you to change the port.  I should mention here that buggering about with your registry can hurt.  Always seek adult supervision, and remember to hold it facing away from you and never to run with it.  Anyway, you've copied the driver, merged the registry information, now all that remains is to reboot your machine and run the application.  That's it !  All that remains now is convert those FAT partitions to NTFS, delete Windows 95, and live happily ever after.

Windows 95 'people'

Unpack the ZIP file to a directory and run 'ars.exe'.  You'll be confronted with an error the first time the application is run.   You'll then be given a chance to change your port settings.

New for 2.0

  • The ability to set virtual folder locations.  For instance, say your latest and greatest project is located at c:\projects\space_invaders98\files_to_download\HereTheyAre, instead of referencing this directory explicitly from your PSX code, or copying the NiceArs exe to that directory, you can now simply set that directory in Nice ARS and all files will be referenced from that point.  To check out this new feature, click on the options button, press the browse button, and set the directory to load from.  Simple as  that.

  • Have all your favorite 'Datel' commands at the press of a button.  Features include Send File, Send Byte, Execute Address, View registers, View Memory, and Reflash.

If your sitting running the application, thinking 'what now?', then you probably haven't read Craigs original article.  I suggest you do.

Download.

There are two files to download.  The main Zip file for Nice ARS, and a Zip file containing the relevant MFC DLLs needed to run it.  If you have the MFC DLLs installed, just download the main Zip.  If you don't have the MFC DLLs, simply download the Zip and copy the DLLs to your system(95) or system32(NT) directory.

MFC DLLs(604KB)

Update for 95/98 users...

I forgot to include the port number entry in the registry for 95 and 98 users.  ARS will not run without this key.  Please save the small registry file below to your disk, and edit the value for the port you run your AR on.  Save the file, and merge it in the registry by double clicking it.   (If you use port $320, simply 'run' the link below).

Windows 95 and 98 Registry file.
