INTERLUDES AND EXAMINATION: April 8th - 24th

I've been doing a lot of thinking over the last 3 weeks. My goals haven't changed drastically, but the goalposts are beginning to move. Having read a gallon load of games industry related info, I'm beginning to 'think twice' about my approach. I said 'by the end of this year'. Now that may still be possible, but at the rate I'm going (programming wise), and the other skills I need (DirectX for starters), I've accepted what some people have been telling me - Get a damn graduate job first so that you've something to fall back on. One day I'm sure I will eventually be involved in the games industry to a certain degree, but I ain't putting all my eggs in the yaroze basket and have to be honest. I fear if I wait any longer to get a graduate job, employers are gonna start to wonder. Speaking of applications, I saw on Nick F's site (or was it Mr Frosty) the 'Preview 1 and 2' letters. Reminds me of the one and only letter I sent of to a game company - Red Lemon Studios. Oh deary me, I just hope when they read my letter they threw it in the bin, cos if that ever surfaced, brrrrrrrr. I do like the idea of a edinburgh produced yaroze game - it'll certainly make an impression if it's organised properly. Actually, the last time I was in Edinburgh was for a job interview with a company, something like Budgie & N. Suffice to say I didn't get the job.

This yaroze diary will still continue, so back to yaroze ->

I was looking for some coding inspiration one night when I decided to take a look at the now familiar Connect-N and VyrMain code. I couldn't resist giving some screen shots of these excuses for games(ahem, Connect-N was more of an AI empirical study ;) )

VYRMAIN -

"If ever a game defined a genre, this would be one such game - the user can guess the genre as 'Pile of S***'" - PC PRO Anonymous

Seriously, If anyone notices what game the main ship sprite was 'borrowed' from, I'll give them the code to this thing. I did draw the tank sprite though, and the multi-dimensional end of level baddie, who unfortunately can't be seen in this shot.

CONNECT-N -

"What, your telling me this is a game?" - Anonymous Tester

Again, if anyone wants the Java code for this thing, including the now much copied 'interface' - ahem, it'll make you think twice about using Java.

I had hoped to have some demo to show, but alas, I have been slacking a lot recently. This is probably due to the purchase of a DVD player and the thought of having to brush up on some 'forgotten' technical knowledge needed to get past the increasingly monotonous 'technical awareness interviews' that companies seem to love. Reminds me of the guy from Budgie & N who asked me about Normalisation at level 3. Try bluffing your way around that one. I've forgotten how awful this whole interview malarky is.

As for yaroze progress, well, just messing about with it still. I just need to get over a few hurdles in programming a 'world' for the yaroze.
