SCEI tantank2.lzh NTSC Tan Tank 2 (Team Spirit)
A marvellously playable tank game featuring 60 mission stages, 13 music tracks, 12 enemy tanks and several options for different styles of game.
The standard one player mission game is joined by training exercises, a two player co-operative mode (one at the wheel, one on guns) and an excellent 2-player vs. battle mode.
It is possible to select several types of camera in one-player mode (use the closest to the tank for most fun) and when paused, the camera angle may be moved - even so your tank looks like it's driving on the ceiling.
Towards the end of the game, there are some very challenging missions - fortunately more the result of excellent tank AI than being overwhelmed by sheer numbers of the enemy.
Some of the options are in Japanese, but fiddling about with them doesn't seem to make much difference anyway.
Grab this now and go sink some Red Storm tanks for me!

SCEI tei_n_b1.lzh NTSC Terra Incognita (Team Fatal)
To be honest, when I first played this it seemed pretty - but with very little game content. Having given it more time, it's become more than just the block pushing exercise I thought it was.
True, most of your time is spent picking up and putting down boxes and bombs, but the diversity of puzzles gained from this is ingenious.
Terra Incognita, as everyone probably knows, looks superb. Little touches like lens flare and the glass text boxes highlight the detail involved. The main characterisation is cute, but the blobs which pass for the majority of the monsters let this down (hardly 'horrable'). It's only very late on, when you find the brief underground section, that you realise how great this game really could be.
The camera control works well and moving your little chap is pretty easy to get the hang of.
There is the option to select either Japanese or semi-English (the translation is in points inspirational).
Make sure you give this game enough time to find the really good bit - it's just a shame that the whole thing isn't right up there, it so easily could have been.

SCEE thoho.zip PAL The House of Hair Out (We Are Alien Scum - Jeff and Tim Hannan)
This is a first person exploration game, the idea being to find the computer wall-panel and then make your way back to the exit again.
Simple?
Well, it would be, if the maze were like any other - because most mazes don't change shape while your back is turned. The House is built from set corridors and ramps which all wrap onto each other and combine in very unlikely ways. Walking down a corridor by no means guarantees that you'll be able to walk back up the same corridor should you turn round. Adding to the disorientation, some sections are mirrored enabling you to catch a glance of yourself disappearing round the corner ahead or if you're trigger happy, shoot yourself. The maze is patrolled by a number of guardians wearing rather menacing attire - they home in on you when you're fairly close but shooting them temporarily halts them in their tracks.
To be honest, I've never played anything like this before. The warped mazes are truly inspired (especially the mirrored sections) and the narrow corridors cetainly help the sense of claustrophobia. For future updates, it may be worth considering windows in some of the walls or gridded floors to further tease the player, perhaps switches to flip sections of the maze - maybe even more complex missions involving the collection and use of several objects.
On the negative side, the AI is noticably weak, the bullets and the 'Hansel and Gretl' breadcrumb trail are rarely useful but the sense of urgency in staying alive, or reaching the exit is nevertheless fulfilling. Of the two settings, 'easy' is very much so and 'hard' seems damn-near impossible - a range of missions of increasing difficulty would fit well here.
This is a truly unique game and there are many interesting ways it could be developed - I look forward to seeing any updates in the future...

SCEI wstg_tv3.zip NTSC Wstg (Wanisan?)
You control a spaceship and two drones in this attractive 2d vertical scrolling shoot'em-up.
The graphics scroll continuously beneath you as you move up difficulty levels, there being more aliens as you progress. Bullet power-ups, which are very satisfying, appear at regular intervals.
There are three kinds of bad-guy, which act fairly convincingly and are very accurate shooters. The collision detection is occasionally a little forgiving (for which you'll end up being very grateful) and the learning curve seems initially very steep.
Overall, a very pleasant game, although a definite stage scheme and intro screen/hi-score frills could be worthy additions. Knowing that the square button locks the drones is useful, knowing that the triangle button alters your speed is less useful.
No sound.

If memory serves, this is a rather neat 3d adventure game with perspective very like Resident Evil.
Technically impressive, but so large as to be unplayable for those who can't read squiggles.
One of the versions I've tried will not upload properly.
